Having the ability to shift gears is a valuable skill that shouldn’t go ignored, and I think it’s a must have skill for designers. All in a days work I have had to create concepts, sketch thumbnails, finalize art for print ads, mock up web pages, create wire frames, coordinate with developers, copywriters and print shops, attend meetings, and the list can go on.
Many struggle with the ability to stop one task and start another and I have seen good designers fail at their job because they are unable to shift gears and maintain consistency with their work. It shows signs of a professional, being able to do this effectively.
I myself have worked hard over the years to be successful at this and consider myself fairly good at it, although I have my days. It’s like anything else, you have to work hard, stay focused and stay positive. Shifting from one thing to the next and back again can be overwhelming and eat you up, making you feel like you are getting nothing accomplished.
Listed are some things that have helped me be effective at shifting gears:
- Take time to clear your head between projects
- Step away from the computer
- Take small breaks
- Develop an effective work flow
- Leave the office on your lunch break
- Stay focused
- Take a minute to ensure you understand the task/project at hand
Now take them or leave them, these are only a few simple things that have helped me out.
What I would like to ask is, are you capable of shifting gears with tasks or projects while staying consistent with your work?
If so, What helps you to succeed at it?
If not, what is your weakness?
Looking forward to your comments.

Great stuff! I definitely do the “step away from the computer” It just helps clear the mind and refresh the body. In my early years of web design I never did that and it kinda made my projects all mushed together. And I think now that I’m married and have a kid that helps me step away too. If you can shift gears and do it smoothly you will have a lot of success.

Wow, this couldn’t be more true man. Wearing multiple hats is a draining thing. I find smiling a useful tool. I know it sound a little queer, but when I start to get overwhelmed with everything, I throw on some good music and smile. Its surprising how is can get you through the day and actually design legit work. Much Love!

I actually prefer working where I shift gears and work on a variety of types of projects/different stages of projects. It keeps me fresh and I find that I cross pollinate projects; it opens me up to answers that I hadn’t thought of before.

Shifting gears…this is something I really struggle with. I get so locked in on one thing and then when the time comes to transition to something different, I freeze up. I’ve seen a buddy of mine do this effortlessly, I’ll ask him about it and if he has any great tips, I’ll post them here. I suspect that it just takes lots of practice, trial and error and a willingness to do what it takes to master the art of shifting gears.
This post hits home for me, thanks for writing it
